STATISTICAL MULTIPLEX TRANSMISSION SYSTEM

PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a statistical multiplex effect in an image transmission system using a terminal stipulated by the H.310 of the ITU-T recommendations. SOLUTION: In a network consisting of a 1st private ATM network, a 2nd ATM network and a public ATM network connected to the 1st and 2nd private ATM networks, a multiplex gateway is placed respectively between the private ATM networks and the public ATM network. The multiplex gateway is provided with ATM transmission line sections 21-23 that calculates statistical information represented by an average rate and a pixel rate of an ATM cell in a transmission ATM signal, with a statistical multiplex control section 24 that sums rates after statistical multiplex processing in response to the statistical information to obtain a result of the sum of the rates, with a quasi-fixed rate control section 25 that calculates a required quasi-fixed rate based on the sum of rates to conduct cell multiplex control based on the quasi-fixed rate, and with an ATM cell multiplex/demultiplex section 26 that transmits a transmission statistical multiplex signal in response to the cell multiplex control.
