PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To reproduce an image with a satisfactory color reproduction characteristic where no skipped gradation nor deformation is in existence in the image. SOLUTION: A color conversion circuit 1 converts primary color information signals R, G, B into lightness, hue and chromaticness information signals L, H, C. A local contrast emphasis circuit 3 applies local contrast emphasis processing to the signals L, H, C to obtain an emphasized lightness information signal L2, on the basis of the lightness information signal L in a matrix consisting of (2M+1)×(2N+1) pixels around a target pixel P. A counter circuit 5 counts the number of pixels within the color reproduction range of an output device included in a coverage of the matrix on the basis of the emphasized lightness information signal L2, the hue and chromaticness information signals H, C and generates a conversion curve to convert signals in the matrix based on the number of pixels, and a color compression circuit 6 compresses the signals. A color conversion LUT 7 converts the compressed signals L3, H, C2 into signals for an output device, and a binary processing circuit 8 applies binary processing to the converted signals.
