Benzophenone sulfonic acids of formula are prepared by reacting the corresponding non-sulfonated benzophenone compound of formula with chlorosulfonic acid in a solvent medium comprising one or more dialkylcarbonates. Process for preparing benzophenone sulfonic acids of formula (I) comprises reacting a compound of formula (II) in which R<1>, R<2> and R<3> = as above, with chlorosulfonic acid and optionally reacting the resulting compound (I) with a hydroxide or alcoholate of a monovalent metal or amines of formula H-N(R<5>)3. The reaction of (II) with chlorosulfonic acid is carried out in the presence of a solvent medium comprising one or more dialkyl carbonates of formula R<6>-O-CO-O-R<7>. R<1> = 1-15 C alkyl, optionally substituted by one or more halo, cyano, hydroxy or 1-15 C alkoxy groups; R<2> and R<3> = H, 1-12 C alkyl, 1-12 C alkoxy, OH, hydroxymethyl or hydroxy(2-6 C)alkyl; R<4> = H or SO3X; X = H, monovalent metal or a group -N(R<5>)3; R<5> independently = H, 1-6 C alkyl, OMe or 2-6 C hydroxyalkyl; and R<6> and R<7> = 1-3 C alkyl. |
