PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To make it possible to respond to user's needs for retrieving term definition by automatically extracting only a term definition part from a document. SOLUTION: A document collected by a collection part 2b is shaped by a text processing part 2d and transferred to a definition extraction part 2e. The extraction part 2e extracts a part concerned with term definition from a text. A definition sentence deciding part 2g executes the decision of generally of the term definition, the collection of the context of a sentence whose terms are defined, the estimation of a field, and the estimation of the sort of term definition, and stores decision results in a term database 2a. When a retrieving request is received by a retrieving request receiving part 1a, the request is transferred to a retrieving part 1b and the term definition is retrieved from the database 2a. A user's request processing part 1d interprets a user's request and outputs the interpreted result as a suitable retrieving condition corresponding to the retrieving part 1b or filters the retrieved result in accordance with a condition provided by the user.
