PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To reduce a processing load of a multiplex transmitter and to make the transmitter small in size by reducing the number of components and a component mount space. SOLUTION: A voice coding/FAX demodulation unit 10 consists of a voice coding means 13 that conducts voice coding, a FAX transmission reception processing means that applies transmission reception processing to a FAX document, a voice detection means 11 that detects whether or not a voice signal is in existence in an input signal, a FAX processing procedure start means 12 that detects a digital identification signal DIS in the input signal to output a reply signal starting the FAX transmission reception processing, and a voice signal processing changeover means 15 that starts the voice coding, when the voice detection means 11 detects a voice signal and continues the FAX processing, when no voice signal is detected. Then the unit 10 can conduct the FAX transmission and the voice coding.
