PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a range finder for widening the range of obtaining distance information and improving the accuracy of the obtained distance information. SOLUTION: This range finder is provided with a pair of optical systems and a pair of area sensors 12A and 12B, respectively forms the image of an object on the area sensors 12A and 12B by the optical systems and measures a distance from the relative position in the base length direction of both images to the object. In this case, the openings 13AP and 13BP of a diaphragm for controlling the luminous flux diameter of light transmitted through the optical systems are turned to an elliptic shape whose long axis matches with the short side direction of the area sensors 12A and 12B and the blurs in a long side direction and a diagonal direction of the images on the area sensors 12A and 12B are reduced. The constitution of turning the opening of the diaphragm to a flat hexagon and matching the longest diagonal with the short side direction of the area sensor and the constitution provided with the plural pairs of line sensors instead of a pair of the area sensors 12A and 12B are also present.
