PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an igniter for igniting charcoal (including a synthesized charcoal such as a mass of charcoal) in a short time without raising the temperature of the igniter or deteriorating a work environment. SOLUTION: An igniter for charcoal comprises an igniting vessel 8 made of a heat insulating material whose upper end is opened and which has a catch basin 14 at a position of upper or intermediate height, an air suction port 11 provided at a position below the catch basin 14 of the igniting vessel and a blowing means 18 for forming an air flow 22 passing from the upper part to the lower part in the igniting vessel 8 through the air suction port and a cooling air flow 23 combined with the exhaust air of the air suction port 11. In the downstream side of the air suction port 11, an exhaust air cooling chamber 2 and a filter chamber 3 are provided to discharge exhaust air to atmosphere through these chamber. As the insulating material, fire bricks or diatom earth can be used.
