PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To reduce manufacturing cost and to facilitate the handling. SOLUTION: The image reader 1 is provided with an operation switch 16. A user has only to operate the operation switch 16 to transit a power saving state to a standby state and the standby state into an operating state, that is, to instruct starting of image reading. Thus, the user can reduce the number of operations of a personal computer, and then even the user unfamiliar with handling of the personal computer can easily handle the image reader 1. Since the operation switch 16 can enter an instruction of transition not only from the power saving state into the standby state and also from the standby state into the operating state, the one operation switch 16 can enter the instruction of transition from the power saving state into the standby state and also from the standby state into the operating state, and the manufacturing cost can be reduced.
