The present invention relates to cellular communication networks, in particular to methods to access packet-based wireless data services, which allow a mobile user equipment to receive various alternatives of packet paging messages and/or to apply various alternatives to access such services. The method according to the present invention performs the steps of receiving and identifying incoming packet paging messages, e.g. transmitted by applying a Short Message Service (SMS) or via the system paging channel, and selecting an appropriate access method to connect to a packet data service by means of interpreting a potential content in said paging message and/or determining from the cell broadcast channel whether a dedicated common packet data channel is supported in a cell of said cellular communication network to which the user equipment can establish a packet data connection.
