Process for removing organic compounds from waste material (1) comprises charging the waste material to a horizontal furnace (2), evacuating the furnace to 5 x 10<-2> to 65 mbar, heating the pipe (6) arranged inside the furnace and parallel to the longitudinal axis of the furnace to 750-1000o C to remove the waste gas produced in the furnace, heating the furnace in stages to 190-350o C and simultaneously introducing oxygen into the pipe, and continuously removing the waste gas from the furnace via the pipe, feeding through a condenser (10) and releasing into the surroundings. The pipe (6) is cooled to 850-1000o C from outside with a gas when the boundary temperature is exceeded. An Independent claim is also included for an apparatus for removing organic compounds from waste material. Preferred Features: The gas is fed through a channel (7) that surrounds the pipe. The furnace is evacuated by drawing air through the pipe.
