The present invention relates to a novel diagnostic method for detecting progression of cancer. In particular, the present invention relates to a diagnostic method for detecting and identifying aggressive forms of certain carcinomas, especially breast cancer and prostate cancer. The present invention also relates to the use of p40 subunit of eukaryotic translation initiation factor 3 (elF3-p40) or a variant or fragment thereof as a diagnostic agent or in therapy.
