748,899. Capacitors. GENERAL ELECTRIC CO., Ltd., and FARNSWORTH, J. May 20, 1954 [May 20, 1953], No. 14196/53. Class 37. In the manufacture of a rolled-type capacitor two metal, e.g. aluminium, foils 1, 2 which are displaced with respect to each other in the width direction are interleaved with strips 3, 4 of stretched or expanded polystyrene and are then wound together, the resultant roll being heated to a temperature of between 100‹ C. and 110‹ C. to cause the polystyrene to consolidate to a single mass within which the electrodes 1, 2 are embedded. By virtue of the initial stretched condition of the polystyrene, which is brought about during its manufacture, contraction occurs during heating, thus ensuring that the consolidation takes place. The strips are wound together on a mandrel 5 which is removed before the heating operation is carried out and replaced by a short polystyrene rod fitting wholly within the capacitor roll and two copper wires which protrude from the ends of the roll and are connected to copper strips attached to the electrodes 1, 2 as described in Specification 748,900. |
