Process for optical inspection of a hollow plastic molding which has a projection (14) left by the injection molding process, especially a plastic bottle (9) or a preform for a bottle, comprises measuring the relative position of a portion of the wall (13) relative to the projection. An Independent claim is included for apparatus for inspecting the bottle or preform comprising a light source (5) for illuminating the bottle, a sensor (7, 8) for measuring the light transmitted through it and an analysis device (3) which determines the relative position of a region of the wall in relation to the projection.
