The invention relates to a device for automatically opening containers, especially sample containers for medically examining human or animal body fluids. The inventive device comprises a detector for optically detecting objects, especially closures of the containers, and for generating an electrical signal which corresponds to at least one measure of the object. The inventive device also comprises a light source (1) that produces a focussed beam of light, a bending means (2) that recursively bends the beam of light (1) in the direction of the measure to be taken and that pivots the beam of light along a measuring path (20). The inventive device further comprises an optical system (7) which guides the beam of light that has been bent along the measuring path (20) onto a sensoring means (8). An object that might be present in the measuring path (20) interrupts the beam of light and the sensoring means (8) detects the time of interruption of the beam of light.
