Bicyclo[3.3.1]nonenes extracted from hypericum spp. That are subsequently redcued at the level of unsatuated prenyl side chains, are described that are useful as dietary supplements, enriched extracts and pharmaceutical compositions. Methods for the use of the dietary supplements, enriched extracts and pharmaceutical compositions are also described. The bicyclo[3.3.1]nonenes are useful as dietary supplements and pharmaceutical compositions for a lower blood glucose levels, lowering serum triglyceride levels, treating hyperglycemia, treating diabetes and treating hyperlipidemia.
