A system for treating a urinary bladder of an individual. The system comprises a balloon for insertion into the urinary bladder. The balloon can be filled with a fluid such that after filling the balloon has a specific gravity less than or equal to that of urine. The system also comprises an applicator for inserting the balloon into the urinary bladder or for removing the balloon from the urinary bladder. The balloon is useful in treating the urinary bladder, in monitoring the urinary bladder and in the treatment of urinary incontinence.
