The invention relates to a device for the point-to-point scanning and section-by section scanning of documents, comprising a fixed, transparent document support (1) for a document (2). An illumination support (6) which is oriented so that it is parallel to the document support (1) is provided above said document support (1). An illumination unit (8) for illuminating the document (1) line by line is fixed to said illumination support. A base support (7) which runs parallel to the illumination support (6) is provided under the document support (1), an optoelectronic scanning mechanism (9) for converting the scanning light into picture signals being fixed thereon. The illumination support (6) and the base support (7) are interconnected by means of a U-shaped connecting element (12). Said connecting element (12) has a pivot joint (16) by which means the illumination support (6) can pivot away from the document support (1) with the illumination unit (8) in order to facilitate access to the document support (1). The illumination unit (8) and the scanning mechanism (9) perform a perpendicularly oriented advancing movement in relation to the scanning lines by means of linear guides (13, 14), in order to scan the surface of the document (1).
