The invention relates to a device and a method for modulating light intensity with a micro-chopper. The invention provides for a flat element comprising a reflecting surface which reflects a light beam directed at the surface of said flat element. Said flat element is connected to a base element via a connecting area in such a way that the flat element can be tilted in relation to the base element. The micro-chopper further comprises an actuator by means of which the flat element can be repeatedly displaced in a target manner from a normal position. The invention is characterized in that at least partial areas of the flat element are magnetic and in that the actuator generates electromagnetic alternating fields and is positioned in relation to the flat element in such a way that said flat element can be displaced in a targeted manner in relation to the base element by means of the forces induced by the electromagnetic alternating field.
