The invention relates to a method for retouching the paint coatings of motor vehicle bodies. New paint is applied to the damaged areas using a spray device and according to the invention, an electric potential is applied between the spray device and the object during the spraying process. The retouching method is preferably used in the production of a multi-layer decorative-effect paint coating, whereby a base coat layer is produced on a substrate surface using an electrostatic application method, said base coat layer is overpainted with a clear paint and the resulting paint coating is dried. According to the invention, any necessary retouching is subsequently carried out in an electrostatic spraying process.
