<p>A dedicated Internet access device acts as an Internet appliance to reduce the complexity of Internet interactions. The access device stores an embedded operating system, embedded browser and user profile information in programmable read only memory so that a user may easily initiate an interface with the Internet by interfacing the access device with a communications medium, such as a telephone line, and by applying power to the access device. A dedicated portal site funnels information from the Internet and focuses the information to optimize utility and reduce complexity to the user. Information may be presented as topical channels that identify, organize and present relevant information to users with minimal user searching. In one embodiment, the access device reduces time associated with rendering an information from the portal site by preloading predicted information to the access device, and rendering the predicted information if a user selects the predicted information. Updates to the operating system, browser, user profile and other information loaded in the programmable read only memory may be made through the Internet in a manner that is invisible to the user.</p> |
