A control device for a discharge lamp, such as a metal halide lamp, controls the lighting of the lamp (10 by supplying a voltage higher than a given voltage level (A) to fire the lamp and then continues to supply a current approximately at a value (B) to provide steady illumination. The control device includes a piezoelectric transducer (2), a light detection circuit (3), a driving frequency switch (4), a first voltage source (5), a second voltage source (6), a current detection device (7) and a current control circuit (8).
