The device has a first regulator for performing fuel injection during an induction stroke to distribute a gas mixture uniformly in a combustion chamber and a second regulator for performing fuel injection during a compression stroke to force a gas mixture towards a zone near an ignition plug. A transition oscillation damping regulator damps longitudinal oscillations of the vehicle by controlling at least the engine or gearbox. A selection device selects the first or second regulator depending on engine load and prevents a transition from the first regulator to the second if transition oscillation damping regulation is being performed when the engine load state is suitable for a transition to the first regulator during operation of the second regulator.
