<p>Its gain is regulated by a gain-control signal (G) capable of taking m discrete values. According to one manufacturing mode, it comprises: m amplifiers (G1,..., Gm) each having a gain that is fixed and different from the gains of the other amplifiers and a passband identical to that of the others; an optical switch (SW1) having an input (E) coupled with the input (EA) of the variable-gain amplifier (AVG1), m outputs (S1,..., Sm) coupled respectively with the inputs of the m fixed-gain amplifiers (G1,..., Gm) and a control input that receives the gain-control signal (G); and an optical switch (SW2) having m inputs (E1,..., Em) coupled respectively with the outputs of the fixed-gain amplifiers m (G1,..., Gm), an output (SC) coupled with the output of the fixed-gain amplifier (AVG1) and a control input that receives the gain-control signal (G).
