A gas generating composition for use in an air bag generating a large volume of gases and forming less amount of solid and liquid particles (residues) upon burning and capable of downsizing a gas generator. A gas generating composition comprising an oxidizer comprising a mixture comprising a phase stabilized ammonium nitrate (PSAN), and nitroguanidine as essential ingredients wherein the content of nitroguanidine in the composition is 35% by weight or less.
