PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To continue smooth trimming by executing the trimming while reducing a width by the width narrowing amount obtained by operating a set value of a plate width after the shearing, of a trailing material, when the amount of displacement is larger than the trimmer shearing tolerance in a side trimmer. SOLUTION: When the amountσof displacement is larger than the trimmer shearing tolerance, the width narrowing amountαis operated on the basis of the amount of displacementσ. Then the conveying line is automatically stopped at a time when a welding point of a strip reaches to a trimmer position by tracking. Then the trimmer shearing width is set on a command width-α, the operation of the conveying line is restarted for restarting the trimmer operation to continuously execute the trimming. In the measurement of width, a center line of a trailing material is continuously measured, the tracking is executed again when the amount of displacementσis returned to be less than the trimmer shearing tolerance, and the setting of the trimmer shearing width is reset on the command width at a time when a returning point of the strip reaches to the trimmer position.
