PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To easily produce a highly active carbon dioxide methanizing catalyst for reacting hydrogen with carbon dioxide under atmospheric pressure to produce methane in high yield by a usual impregnation method. SOLUTION: A carbon dioxide methanizing catalyst is obtained by supporting Ni and/or Co on a tetragonal zirconia carrier stabilized by one or more kind of a stabilizing element selected from Y, La, Ce, Pr, Nd, Sm, Gd, Tb, Dy, Eu, Mg and Ca. The content of the stabilizing elements is 15 atomic % or less of the sum total of Zr and the stabilizing element and the support amt. of Ni and/or Co is 5-50 atomic % of the sum total of Zr, the stabilizing element and Ni and/or Co. The carbon dioxide methanizing catalyst is produced by adding a salt of the stabilizing element to a zirconia sol. aq. soln. under stirring and evaporating the resulting mixture to dryness under heating to obtain the zirconia carrier having a tetragonal structure and adding an aq. soln. of a salt of Ni and/or Co to the zirconia carrier under stirring and evaporating the resulting soln. to dryness under heating and baking the dried mixture before reducing the same. |
