PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To constitute a safety mechanism of a small number of components by providing the mechanism because of a danger of exposing a cutter when a tray of sharpening chips is removed from an electric pencil sharpener. SOLUTION: In a safety mechanism, a safety switch lever 36 is rotatably moved counterclockwise by a rib 38 of operating the lever projected rear of a tray 20 of sharpening chips in the state that the tray 20 is mounted in a body case 18, and returned to a normal position by an elastic force of a contact plate A34 itself by releasing the positional restriction of the plate A34. When a pencil is inserted, the plate A34 is disposed to come into contact with a contact plate B32. The lever 36 is rotatably moved clockwise by a force of a spring 31 in the state that the case 20 is removed from the case 18, the plate A34 is lifted and locked, and a contact interval with the plate B32 is broadened, and the plate 34A is not brought into contact with the plate B32 even in the pencil inserted state in the safety mechanism.
