PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a welding wire which is used for mutual welding of base materials composed of ferritic stainless steel and is capable of suppressing the weld cracking of deposited metal and improving the toughness in a weld zone and also to provide a welding method. SOLUTION: A welding wire 1 consists of a ferritic stainless steel wire 2 having a composition consisting of, by weight, <=0.030% C, 0.4-1.5% Si, <=1.0% Mn, 12.0-25.0% Cr, <=0.030% P, <=0.020% S, <=0.2% Ni, <=0.4% Cu, and the balance essentially Fe; and a Cu plating layer 4 which is applied to the surface of the wire 2. The total weight of Cu in the wire 2 and Cu in the Cu plating layer 4 is regulated to 0.1-0.6 wt.% of the total weight of the wire 2 and the Cu plating layer 4. Moreover, a welding wire 1' in which an Ni plating layer 6 is formed between the wire 2 and the Cu plating layer 4 and the total weight of Ni in the wire 2 and the Ni plating layer 6 is regulated to <=0.4 wt.% of the total weight of the wire 2 and the Cu and Ni plating layers 4, 6 is included.
