PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To solve the aging stability problem inherent to a carboxyvinyl polymer commonly used as a thickening agent for a hair-setting agent, a gel-type cosmetic base for body-slimming massage, etc., caused by the variation of viscosity with salt concentration owing to the carboxyl group of the polymer. SOLUTION: Viscosity of a glycol compound can be increased by mixing a glycol with starch and/or a modified starch and gelatinizing the mixture with heat. A thickened product stable with time can be produced by this process.
