PURIFICATION OF VINYL CHLORIDE

PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for purifying vinyl chloride containing minute amounts of hydrogen chloride and moisture by contacting it with an alkali metal hydroxide so as to suppress acetylene production. SOLUTION: This method for purifying vinyl chloride comprises either contacting the vinyl chloride with an alkali metal hydroxide or passing the vinyl chloride in a liquid form through a solid alkali metal hydroxide-packed bed to remove the hydrogen chloride and moisture as contaminants in the vinyl chloride; wherein at a point when the cumulative amount of the moisture in the vinyl chloride passed through the packed bed comes to <=0.20 g per g of the solid alkali metal hydroxide, the alkali metal hydroxide in the packed bed is replaced by a new batch thereof.
