PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an instrument and a method for measuring a concrete crest in which the height of the concrete crest to be pressed in a steel tubular column and the press-fit speed can be automatically measured with excellent accuracy on the real time basis. SOLUTION: A top plate 5 having a through center opening 5a and a measuring instrument 6 are placed on an upper portion of an erected steel tubular column. The measuring instrument 6 comprises a laser beam range finder 8 and a personal computer (hereinafter, referred to as PC) 9, and the PC 9 comprises a control means of the laser beam range finder 8, a data operating means, a display means of the result, and an operating means of the measuring instrument 6. The measurement is started together with the laser beam emission by the key operation of the PC 9, a concrete is press-filled in the steel tubular column 2 and the distance to the crest CL is measured. The result of measurement is sequentially operated, and displayed on the PC 9 on the real time basis. A communication means is provided with the PC 9, and remotely operated by a PC 10 on the ground level away from the laser beam range finder 8.
