PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a continuous casting method for a medium carbon steel in which high speed casting can be executed without lowering the casting speed and the development of surface defect such as longitudinal crack can be prevented on the surface of a cast slab and a mold used for this method. SOLUTION: The mold 1 provided with a plurality of holes 7-1, 7-2 for inserting temp. sensors, in which the temp. sensor 9 can be inserted in the horizontal direction into a cooling plate 16 at the long wall sides of the mold 1, and plurality of holes 13 for inserting bars in which metal-made bars 10 can be inserted upward from the lower end of the cooling plate 16. The inserting depth of the metal-made bar 10 inserted upward from the lower end of the cooling plate 16 is adjusted in accordance with the value of heat flux directed toward the opposite side of molten steel in the cooling plate 16 obtd. from the temp. measured with the temp. sensor 9.
