PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To stop the operation of a carriage moving mechanism rapidly when the operation of a carriage is forcibly stopped by an external main cause or to wait for the resumption command of printing from a printer user to resume printing. SOLUTION: In a printer having a carriage 3 loaded with a printing carriage 2, a carriage driving mechanism 4 for reciprocally moving the carriage 3 in a main scanning direction by the driving of a pulse motor 41, a medium feed mechanism feeding a printing medium in a subscanning direction, an encoder unit 6 detecting the actual stop position of the carriage and a control means for controlling the printing head, the carriage driving mechanism and the medium feed mechanism, a carriage stop position abnormality judging means comparing the data related to the actual stop position of the carriage 3 during the operation of the carriage moving mechanism 4 with the data related to the actual stop position obtained from the encoder unit 6 to judge whether the carriage 3 stops at a predetermined position is provided.
