PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a new microorganism capable of reducing selenic acid efficiently without using a high concentration of organic material and also even under a condition such as the presence of nitric acid state nitrogen. SOLUTION: This new microorganism is Azoarcus sp MA-23 (FERM BP-6549) capable of reducing selenic acid not inhibited by nitric acid state nitrogen, and is a Gram negative bacillus having a base sequence of DNA 16S-rDNA encoding 16S-rRNA of the formula. By bringing Azoarcus sp MA-23 (FERM BP-6549) in contact with a waste water containing selenic acid under an anaerobic condition, the selenic acid-containing waste water is treated. Preferably, it is used in the presence of an active sludge. A condition not containing heavy metal ions such as chromic acid, tungstic acid, and molybdic acid is preferable. As the wastewater containing selenic acid, the wastewater from a metal refining industry, a water glass industry, a chemical industry and a coal or petroleum- combusting waste gas treating process, is preferable.
