A brush cleaning apparatus 20 for collecting oil or some other substance from the water surface or ground surface 27. The brush cleaning unit 21 of the apparatus 20 incorporates a rotary brush cylinder 22 and a scraping unit 24 for freeing the oil from the bristles 23 of the brush cylinder. The scraping unit incorporates a scraping member 25, 38 equipped with a scraping or stripping edge 36, which scraping member is in contact with the bristles of the brush cylinder and has a surface which is inclined relative to the axis of the brush cylinder and to which the scraping edge in contact with the bristles of the brush cylinder is connected.
