PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain dihydrocarbylaluminum hydride useful as a reducing agent, or the like, in an improved reaction yield by reacting a dihydrocarbylaluminum halide with sodium hydride in the presence of a polishing medium mixed with the reactants. SOLUTION: By reacting (A) a dihydrocarbylaluminum halide (preferably a dimethylaluminum halide) with (B) sodium hydride in the presence of (C) a polishing medium, (D) dihydrocarbylaluminum hydride is obtained. It is preferably that the reaction is carried out in a 6-8C saturated hydrocarbon solvent at a reaction temperature of 20-80 deg.C and that the component A of 1 mol is reacted with the component B of 0.9-1.1 mol. In addition, it is preferable that 0.9-1.1 mol (based on 1 mol halogen atom remaining in the solution of the reaction product) metal hydroxide is added to the solution from which by-products are removed after the above reaction and the metal hydroxide is subjected to reaction at 20-80 deg.C. The objective purified compound is obtained by removing by-products and the solvent.
