PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To bring a document into close contact with a platen glass while reading it without upsizing or complicating a device nor increasing a load in conveying the document. SOLUTION: When a document conveying belt 38 rotates in the forward direction (indicated by an arrowhead C), a pressing member 42 brought into contact by its own weight with the rear side of the belt only oscillates in keeping with the vertical motion of the document conveying belt 38, but does not work to press the document conveying belt 38 against a platen glass 32. If the document conveying belt 38 rotates in the reverse direction, the pressing member 42 rotates in the direction of an arrowhead D by its friction force against the rear side of the belt. The rotation of the pressing member 42 in the direction of the arrowhead D generates a pressing force relative to the document conveying belt 38 against the platen glass 32, thus it is possible to bring a document 30 into close contact with the platen glass 32 by receiving the pressing force from the document conveying belt 38.
