PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a shield driving method and a shield machine which enable simplification of an operation for fitting a segment, enhancement of the efficiency thereof, reduction of the amount of earth brought about by driving, support of a load of earth and water pressures by an existing segment already provided for lining, without deformation of the segment, and enhancement of the accuracy of assembly of the segments. SOLUTION: An erector 6 for fitting inside a tunnel a segment being a divided body of a steel tube and having a circumferential length obtained by dividing the inside circumference of a tunnel into three circumferentially is provided and a plurality of load supporting jacks 23 are provided for a shield jack 5. A plurality of load supporting mechanisms 7 which transmit to an existing segment Sa a load of earth and water pressures acting on a shield machine 1 from front on the occasion of fitting of the segment, through the intermediary of the load supporting jacks 23, are provided.
