PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To improve the working property of maintenance within a truss in a passenger conveyor having an inspection footstep by providing a tread separable by operating a tread-side engagement member provided on the reverse side of the inspection footstep from the surface side to release the engagement of the thread-side engagement member with a frame-side engagement member. SOLUTION: An escalator has general footsteps and at least one inspection footstep 10, and the inspection footstep 10 has a pair of insert holes 13 capable of inserting an operating body 12 in the center. A lower support 15 is fixed to the reverse side of a tread 6c, and a link mechanism 14 comprising a rotating member 21 is constituted on the reverse side of the lower support 15, and the link mechanism 14 is movably supported by the lower support 15. When a maintenance work is performed within a truss, the operating body 12 is inserted to the insert hole 13 to rotate the rotating member 21. The tips of the tread-side engagement members 17a and 17b of the link mechanism 14 are then retreated and slipped out from the insert holes of frame-side engagement members 20a and 20b. The tread 6c is separated from a frame 6b in this state.
