PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To produce nitrodiphenylamine at a low cost while preventing the by-production of ortho-compound in the case of using aniline by reacting carbanilide with nitrobenzene in a polar organic solvent in the presence of a base. SOLUTION: 4-Nitrodiphenylamine is produced by reacting (A) carbanilide with (B) 0.5-20 times mol of nitrobenzene in terms of the amount of the component B reacting with the component A in the presence of (C) a base at a molar ratio C:A of 1:1 to 10:1, preferably 2:1 to 6:1 in (D) a polar organic solvent at a volume ratio (D:B) of 1:100 to 1:1, preferably 1:30 to 1:1 in oxygen, nitrogen or air at 20-150 deg.C, preferably 50-80 deg.C. The component C is e.g. sodium hydroxide, sodium hydride and potassium hydroxide and the component D is e.g. dimethyl sulfoxide and nitrobenzene.
