PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To produce high purity bistrifluoromethylbenzyl amines as isolated amines in a simple method by catalytically hydrogenating specific compounds in the presence of Raney cobalt and an aliphatic ether. SOLUTION: The subject compounds, for example the compounds of formula II (E) are obtained by carrying out the catalytic hydro genation of (A) bistrifluoromethylbenzonitriles of formula I in the presence of (B) 0.05-1 kg of the Raney cobalt as the metal, (C) 0.3-2 kg of the aliphatic ether (e.g. tetrahydrofuran), (D) 0.2-4 kg of ammonia, the amount of the components (B)-(D) are based on 1 kg of the component (A). In this method, the component E of formula IV is obtained from the component (A) of the formula III. Preferably, 3,5-bistrifluoromethylbenzyl amine as the component (E) is obtained from 3,5- bistrifluoromethylbenzonitrile as the component (A).
