PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a balance weight for an elevator capable of securing a counter clearance easily and efficiently. SOLUTION: A balance weight is constituted such that a mounting position of an adjustable base 1e to a frame body 1b is variable between a contact position and a non-contact position to a shock absorber 7. When a main rope is stretched, and a counter clearance should be secured, the counter clearance is secured easily by mounting the adjustable base 1e to the non-contact position to the shock absorber 7.
