PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain the subject new compound useful as an active ingredient of a histamine 2 receptor antagonist having a histamine 2 receptor antagonistic activity and capable of manifesting a potent acid secretion-inhibiting activity. SOLUTION: This compound is N- (Z)-4-[[4-(piperidinomethyl)-2- pyridyl]oxy]-2-butenyl}formamide of formula I. The compound of formula I can be obtained by reacting (Z)-4-[[4-(piperidinomethyl)-2-pyridyl]oxy]-2- butenyl}amine of formula II with ethyl formate preferably at 50-150 deg.C for 30 min to 24 hr. The compound of formula I is useful as an anti-ulcer agent, and is useful for the treatment of inflammatory diseases in gastrointestinal tract such as gastritis, peptic ulcer, duodenal ulcer, etc.
