PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To enable selection between a permission mode, that allows automatic stop of engine and non-permission mode according to a driver's intention, by prohibiting automatic stop at drive position and providing a special drive position, which allows automatic stop of engine at the proximity of the drive position. SOLUTION: A P-N gate 100 between which a shift lever directly moves is formed between 'N' position and 'P' position. At the gate 100, special grooves 102, 104, 106 are formed for 'P', 'R', and 'N' respectively in descending order, in a direction different from shift lever operating direction. The R groove 104 is provided with a reverse groove switch 120 that detects reverse position. In downward left direction of the N groove 106, a D ECO groove 125a is formed. This groove is provided with a D ECO switch 126 which allows automatic stop of engine, when the shift lever is placed in this groove. In down right direction, a 'D' position 128 which has forward running function that does not automatically stop the engine is formed.
