PURPOSE:To profitably obtain a diol compound having a cyclohexane ring by hydrogenating a diol compound having a benzene ring in the presence of a reducing catalyst and an alkali metal hydroxide in an organic solvent. CONSTITUTION:1 Pt.wt. of a compound of formula I [R1, R2 are H, CH3) (e.g. 1,2-di(1-hydroxyethyl)benzene] is hydrogenated in the presence of 0.005-0.2 pt.wt. of a reduction catalyst, preferably a rhodium catalyst, and 0.0001-0.005 pt.wt. of an alkali metal hydroxide, preferably lithium hydroxide, in 0.5-20 pts.wt. of an organic solvent such as methanol preferably at 50-200 deg.C under a pressure of 5-30kg/cm<2>G to obtain the objective compound of formula II [e.g. 1,2-di(1- hydroxyethyl)cyclohexane]. |
