PURPOSE:To produce a large cyclic ketone in high yield without requiring special purification by subjecting a diesterification product of straight-chain alkanoic diacid to acyloin condensation to carry out intramolecular cyclization and then reducing the resultant acyloin condensation product using a specified sulfuric acid having low corrosion resistance. CONSTITUTION:A diesterification product of a straight-chain alkanoic diacid of formula I [(n) is 12-18] is subjected to intramolecular cyclization by an acyloin condensation reaction to afford an acyloin condensation reaction product of formula II. Then the product is reduced using a >=14N and <26N sulfuric acid and zinc powder to provide the objective large cyclic ketone of formula III. Reduction yield is improved and a large cyclic ketone having low degree of pigmentation is obtained in remarkably enhanced production efficiency due to the use of >=14N and <26N sulfuric acid. The resultant large cyclic ketone exhibits musk-like smell and is useful as a perfume or a compounding substrate thereof. |
