PURPOSE: A clamping device is provided which can work with biting a processing material having a limit error on a large outer periphery and/or a little deformation resistance, in particular, can work with biting a minimum processing material having a thin thickness. CONSTITUTION: A clamping device (10) with a clamping ring (13) is made of elastomer with a U-shaped cross section. The clamping ring (13) is accommodated in the recess (15) of a retaining device (12) with parallel sidewalls. The recess (15) can be connected to a hydraulic or pneumatic pressure source via a connecting conduit (18). The outer side of the web (21) of the U profile acts as a clamping surface (24). Multiple of clamping members (27) made of a harder material are embedded in an area of this clamping surface, in which at least the generating line facing away from the clamping surface (24) is uncovered. The clamping members (27) extend axially in the same manner as the clamping ring (13). One of the sidewalls of the recess (13) is formed by a clamping portion (31) which is part of a clamping device (36) and which can be guided by means of axial displacement in the retaining device (12) and sealed in relation to it by a peripheral sealing member (34). The clamping portion (31) is coupled to a mechanical drive (36) operating in an axial direction. The clamping device (10) can be used for external clamping and internal clamping of a workpiece.
