PURPOSE: A method for controlling a direct-injection internal combustion engine is provided which can be operated under a formation of saturated air through a uniform mixture and high air overflow. CONSTITUTION: A piston(10) confines a combustion chamber(12) in a cylinder. An intake channel(13) approach to an inner combustion chamber. A combustible air is inflowed to a cylinder(11) by an intake valve(14) through the intake channel(13) and is controlled by a discharge valve(15) and gas channel is branched off from the combustion chamber(12). A broadband ramda probe(17) type oxygen sensor and NOx-catalyst converter(18) is arranged on the discharge gas channel(16). The NOx-catalyst converter is used to secure a limit value required in the operation range of the lean burn combustion. Also the catalyst converter absorbs a NOx-compound in the emission generated in the lean burn combustion by a coating thereof. A recirculation of emission is accompanied to reduce NOx-discharge generated in an internal combustion engine which an injection and saturated air intake operation occurs.
