PURPOSE: A block based image processing method and apparatus are provided to remove a blocking phenomenon generated when processing a block based image by using a space variable filtering based on an image recovering theory. CONSTITUTION: A peaking direction detector(100) detects a peaking direction by each block of processed image signals. The first through S band pass filters(110,112,...,114) filter the processed image signals to S different bands. A signal selector(116) selects one of image signals of each block filtered by the first through S band pass filters(110,112,...,114) in response to the detected peaking direction. A signal synthesizer(118) synthesizes image signals of each block outputted from the signal selector(116) with one another and outputs the synthesized signal as an original signal a blocking phenomenon of which is removed. |
