PURPOSE: A compact gas spring is provided to achieve an improved structure of the spring with durability and reliability by an increased volume of gas chamber, stoke of sufficiently long piston rod, and low operative temperature, allowing the gas chamber to have sufficient compression of gas without overheating of gas chamber. CONSTITUTION: A compact gas spring(10) comprises a tubular case(14) having a chamber(28) and a circular wall(22) forming an opening at an end of the chamber(28); a rod(16) received into the chamber(28) for a reciprocative movement in axial direction and which is projected from the chamber(280 through the opening; and a bearing and seal assembly(12) constituted by a bearing(70) having a retainer ring(40) at least partially accommodated into the chamber(28) and which is accommodated into the case(14) and a penetrating bore supported by the ring(40) and which receives the rod(16) to be slidably moved, a circular retainer(80) supported by the ring(40) and which restricts the movement with respect to the ring(40), and a seal member supported by the ring(40) and which is received into the ring(40) at an upper stream of the retainer(80), the seal member supplying a seal between the rod(16) and the retainer ring(40).
